In the paving world, there’s a lot of lingo to learn. It can get confusing for clients, especially when names like “reclaim and repave” don’t sound much different from “remove and replace.” Both of these are used when the existing asphalt is too deteriorated for an overlay. While these names may sound similar, they are actually two different services with very different methods.
Reclaim & Repave
We prefer to use this process whenever possible because it’s eco-friendly and cost-effective. Our pulverizing machines will grind away the top layer of the asphalt—we are then able to see if the asphalt underneath is structurally sound. If it is, we use that pulverized asphalt and mix it with a predetermined amount of asphalt material. Then, we use that mixture as the new top layer of the asphalt.
This process is quicker than a full remove and replace, but it can only be used if that second layer is in good condition. Reclaim and repave saves time and money because that second layer doesn’t have to be removed. We can also use our laser profiling technique to find the best spot for new drainage, if needed.
Remove & Replace
Sometimes, that second layer of asphalt just isn’t in good condition, and it needs to be removed. When your parking lot needs a removal and replacement, you can count on us! After removing the base layer, we’ll reinstall MD DOT base material to give your parking lot a proper foundation. We also ensure that there are no thin spots in the new pavement by adhering to specific blacktop thickness guidelines.
We want your pavement to last for a long time, especially through our harsh Minnesota winters. If your lot was in rough shape before this winter, this process is likely what you’ll need.
After both services, you can join our free maintenance program. Each spring, one of our experts will come out and assess your pavement. This way, small cracks or potholes can be patched early, rather than waiting until your parking lot is in such bad shape that it needs to be replaced.
No matter the process, Metro Paving gets it done right. We’ve been serving the Twin Cities area for over twenty years.
